Healthy Road Trips

Summer is here. When you are traveling with your family - can you go on a road trip and still be healthy? Yes, there are better options than fast food! Luisa joined WFMZ’s Eve Russo to share some of her best secrets to a healthy trip; watch the segment here!

PREPARE WITH SNACKS:

  • Kale Crackers – So healthy, can be a substitute meal.

  • Sunflower seeds – Fun to eat too

  • Cassava chips – If you are looking for a crunch, a better option than potato chips

  • Plantain Chips – Add fiber to your diet

  • Flaxseed Crackers – Enjoy omega -3 benefits

  • Snacking Pickles – A savory option

  • Seaweed snacks – Savory or add to salads

So many snack options out there – but it is key to read the label.

Be sure your snacks do not contain dextrose, maltodextrin, corn starch or natural flavors. (Natural flavors aren’t so natural). If you cannot pronounce the ingredient, your body will have trouble digesting it.

FRESH FOODS ARE GOOD TOO:

  • Organic Cherry tomatoes – plentiful this time of year.

  • Cut veggies – carrots, celery and small snacks of organic hummus and guacamole

DRINKS:

  • Coconut Water – great for hydration. A variety of options.

PROTEIN OPTIONS:

  • Beef Sticks – Also use in a salad for a quick protein

  • Toasted Coconut flakes – crunchy and tasty

  • Pumpkin Seeds – good dose of protein and zinc

  • Chickpea Snacks- more crunch and nutrient dense

If you have a little time to plan… protein balls are a great idea. Easily made in 10 minutes!

Sunbutter Protein Balls

  • ¾ cup organic sunflower butter

  • 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

  • ¼ cup maple syrup

  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips

Mix and roll into 1 inch balls. Store in fridge or cooler.

CONCLUSION

The healthiest foods are not made from chemicals, but real ingredients. If you like to just grab and go, there are lots of options for the whole family!
